Mechanics should have ASE certification before you hire them. This certification lets you know that your mechanic has at least 2 years of experience and has passed a test. This means you will have an expert working on your car.
Never underestimate how important it is to carrying an emergency kit inside your vehicle. Your kit should include jumper cables, tire changing tools and maybe some extra gas. In the event that your car were to break down in the middle of the night on a deserted road, bring blankets, batteries, and a flashlight.
Check your radiator frequently. You should let your car run for a few minutes, shut the engine and open your hood. You should never open your radiator whenever your car is turned on. Check the level of fluid in radiator and add any if necessary. Be mindful that some coolants are meant to be mixed with 50% water.
To keep rust from becoming an issue, wash and wax your car regularly. All cars are going to rust, so make sure that you wash your vehicle at least once a month. Utilize quality waxes to keep the paint looking new.
Keep a record when your car is fixed or maintained. Future problems can be easily solved when auto technicians have access to past records. If you lack such records, you may end up paying more money for diagnostic work.
When visiting a repair shop, be mindful of warning signs that the shop is not a good one. If they tend to talk in circles or ignore your questions, then they might not be all that you want them to be. It’s best to feel that you trust your repair person, so don’t hesitate to move on.
Do not let a mechanic work on your car before knowing about their prices and how much they charge for labor. If you have questions on the service, pose them immediately. You have a right to know how much a repair will cost and what it will consist of. Some shops have the repair times established by certain manufacturers. Some “Minor” repairs could take all day if they go by those manufacturers’ established times.
